Transportation in Mae Sai

Mae Sai's transport is built around the border crossing and the compact town grid. Songthaews (shared pick-ups) are the workhorse, cheap, frequent, and they loop between the Thai immigration post, the market strip, and the bus station every few minutes. For anything beyond the town core, motorbike taxis cluster at the main intersection; they're a moderate splurge but cut travel time in half on the hilly back lanes. If you're heading up to the hill-tribe villages or the Golden Triangle viewpoint, chartered tuk-tuks wait near the clock tower, agree the round-trip fare up front and insist on waiting time included. First-timers should note there's no airport in Mae Sai itself. The closest gateway is Chiang Rai Airport, 60 km south. From there, the honest play is the airport minivan counter inside arrivals: it's a fraction of a taxi and drops you beside Mae Sai's main bus station in about 90 minutes. Skip the freelance drivers who meet you outside baggage claim, they'll quote "special price" and detour to gem shops. Once in Mae Sai, Grab works sporadically. If the app stalls, walk 100 m to the songthaew stop instead of haggling on the street.
